SLC, MLC, TLC or QLC: what should you actually choose for your SSD?
The more a cell has to distinguish between levels of charge, the higher the density increases. The cost per gigabyte decreases, but writing becomes more complex, native endurance decreases, and the need for error correction increases. Kioxia clearly summarizes this trade-off in its presentation of the different NAND technologies.
| NAND technology | Main advantage | Possible use cases | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| SLC – 1 bit per cell | Endurance, low latency and simple read operations | Very write-intensive workloads, critical systems or legacy equipment requiring low capacity | High cost and more limited capacities |
| MLC – 2 bits per cell | Good endurance with higher capacity | Automation systems, sustained data logging and demanding industrial applications | Less widely available than in the past |
| TLC – 3 bits per cell | Good balance between cost, capacity and performance | Most industrial PCs when the controller and firmware are suitable | Check TBW, cache, temperature and sustained write performance |
| QLC – 4 bits per cell | Density and cost per gigabyte | Mostly read-intensive workloads or storage requiring high capacity | Less suitable by default for continuous writes and heavily used low-capacity SSDs |
| pSLC or SLC mode | Uses high-density NAND in a mode designed to prioritize endurance | Applications requiring an intermediate solution between standard TLC or MLC and true SLC | It is not native SLC: check the guaranteed endurance of the final product |
A well-designed TLC, sufficiently sized and well-cooled, can be a better choice than a theoretically more durable technology paired with a mediocre controller. The nature of the NAND is an important criterion, but it is never a conclusion on its own.
