Comparison of rugged industrial touchscreens from 6.5" to 21.5"

The offer of industrial touch screens in the professional domain is very broad. There are many brands and a good number of references. Not all are equivalent in terms of quality, finish, and durability. Industrial touch monitors are recognized to have a longer lifespan than consumer versions. To assist you in choosing an industrial screen for your needs, Integral System offers you a detailed comparison of high-performing and quality references.

Industrial quality screens are therefore also more durable. Depending on the models, there are treatments on the touch panels or glass to limit scratches, resist impacts, avoid reflections, or resist moisture (Technology Optical bonding).

Most industrial screens are touch-enabled.

You will find in this comparison screens ranging from 6.5" to 21.5". Depending on your needs and the installation location, you may prefer a touchscreen in 16:9 format (wide screen) or in the more traditional 4:3 format.

Industrial Touch Screen Comparison 4:3 Format

The 4:3 screen format is still widely used today in the professional and industrial fields. This format has the advantage of being much more compact. It therefore takes up less space than a 16:9 format, allowing it to be installed in places like automation cabinets. The enthusiasm for this ratio comes from several arguments in its favor:

  • More compact, these industrial touchscreens fit more easily into a cabinet door or a machine control panel, for example,
  • The resolutions offered by these monitors are still compatible with older operating systems that are still widely used in the industry,
  • SCADA, HMI, or even machine- or production line-specific applications are generally old and optimized for display on a 4:3 screen,
  • It is much easier to find resistive touch screens in this format than in the 16:9 format

What is optical bonding?

Optical bonding is a glass technology that adheres to a screen or monitor, enhancing display quality in very humid environments, such as outdoors. Indeed, it is not uncommon for outdoor displays to be damaged. This layer helps to prevent these issues. Learn more about Optical Bonding.

The different methods for mounting an industrial touchscreen

Each monitor model has its own specifications and technical characteristics. The type of mounting is one of them. It is therefore important to verify that your selected touch monitor is compatible. Here is a list of existing installation types:

  • Built-in,
  • Placed on a desk with a dedicated stand,
  • Mounted on a wall,
  • Mounted on a bracket or a VESA 75mm or 100mm arm,
  • Rackable on a 19" rack in a drawer,
  • Screen installable on a pole,
  • Din Rail
  • ...

Depending on the screen ranges, there may be specific mounting kits available as an option.

Frequently Asked Questions About Industrial Touch Screens

What is an industrial touch screen?
An industrial or rugged touch screen is a monitor equipped with a capacitive (multi-touch) or resistive touchscreen, designed for intensive use in environments that are generally not suited for electronic hardware, such as factories, production lines,...

rn

Why prefer an industrial touch screen over a consumer version?
An industrial touch screen meets stringent standards in terms of quality, durability, longevity, and resistance to harsh environments. Additionally, the touchscreen is hardened to withstand professional and intensive use.

rn

How to choose between a capacitive touchscreen and a resistive touchscreen?
As a reminder, a capacitive touchscreen is similar to that of a tablet. A resistive touchscreen operates through pressure applied to the screen. Regarding the choice, it all depends on the intended use. If you are using thick gloves, for optimal operation it is more appropriate to use resistive touch technology. Conversely, if you are using thin gloves or bare hands, the capacitive multi-touch will be much more pleasant.

rn

What is 4:3 or 16:9?
4:3 or 16:9 is a term that describes the ratio between the width and height of the screen. It defines its elongated or more square appearance. Thus the 4:3 ratio was historically the format that was most commonly used. Today, thanks to videos and cinema, the 16:9 format (wide screen) is the most widely used.
